Yamunotri
Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, is located in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 3,293 meters. The Yamunotri Temple, built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. Surya Kund, a natural hot spring near the temple, is used for cooking prasad. The pilgrimage involves a 6 km trek from Janki Chatti through rugged mountain trails.
Gangotri
Gangotri, the origin of the Ganges River, is situated at 3,100 meters in Uttarakhand. The Gangotri Temple, built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa, is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The sacred river is believed to have descended here when King Bhagirath prayed for the salvation of his ancestors. Gaumukh Glacier, the actual source of the Ganga, is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.
Kedarnath
Kedarnath, home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is located at 3,583 meters in the Rudraprayag district. The Kedarnath Temple, believed to be built by the Pandavas and later revived by Adi Shankaracharya, is a major pilgrimage site. It remains covered in snow for six months and is accessible via a 16 km trek from Gaurikund. The temple survived the devastating 2013 floods, reinforcing its spiritual significance.
Badrinath
Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is the most important of the Chardham shrines, situated at 3,300 meters. The temple, established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century, is located on the banks of the Alaknanda River. The sacred Tapt Kund hot spring is believed to have medicinal properties. The temple remains open for only six months due to extreme weather conditions.
